Your Complete Alberta Registry Document Checklist (For Your Licence Test)

Heading to an Alberta registry agent to get your first learner's licence is an exciting step, but it can quickly turn frustrating if you arrive without the correct documentation. Alberta has strict requirements to verify your identity and residency to ensure the integrity of its licensing system. Being prepared is key to a smooth, successful visit.

This complete document checklist will ensure you have everything you need, whether you're applying for your first Class 7 licence, taking your road test, or exchanging a licence from another province.

For Your First Class 7 Learner's Licence

When you apply for your very first driver's licence in Alberta, you must prove three things: your legal name and date of birth, your legal right to be in Canada, and that you live in Alberta.

You will need to provide original documents (no photocopies or expired documents).

This primary document establishes who you are and your right to be in the country.

Acceptable Documents:

  • Canadian Birth Certificate
  • Valid Canadian Passport
  • Permanent Resident Card
  • Canadian Citizenship Card
  • Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS) Card

2. Proof of Identity (One Document)

This document must have a photo or a signature to confirm the identity established by your primary document. Note: If you use a valid Canadian passport as your primary document, it will also satisfy this requirement.

Acceptable Documents:

  • Valid Alberta Driver's Licence or ID Card
  • Valid Passport from any country
  • Nexus Card
  • Provincial/Territorial ID Card
  • Canadian Military ID Card

3. Proof of Alberta Residency (Two Documents)

You must provide two separate documents proving you live in Alberta. Both documents must show your full name and current Alberta address. Digital copies or online printouts are often acceptable for things like utility bills.

Acceptable Documents (must be dated within the last 90 days):

  • Utility bills (gas, electricity, water, internet, phone)
  • Bank or credit card statements
  • Account statements from a financial institution
  • Pay stubs or earning statements
  • Rental or lease agreement

Other Acceptable Documents:

  • Property tax bill or land title
  • Mail from a federal, provincial, or municipal government body

Important: The two documents must come from different sources. For example, you cannot use a Visa statement and a chequing account statement from the same bank.

4. Additional Requirements for Minors (Under 18)

  • Parental Consent: A parent or legal guardian with proper identification must accompany you to the registry to sign a consent form. If a guardian is signing, you must provide the legal guardianship documents.

For Your Road Test Appointment

When you show up for your road test, you need to bring:

  • Your Current Alberta Driver's Licence: This will be your Class 7 Learner's Licence for the basic road test, or your Class 5-GDL for the advanced test.
  • Valid Vehicle Documents: The vehicle you are using must have the original, current Vehicle Registration and Proof of Insurance (pink card) inside it.
  • Road Test Confirmation: The receipt or email confirming your booking.
  • Corrective Lenses: If your licence has a condition for wearing glasses or contacts, you must be wearing them.

Important Final Tips

  • Name Consistency: The name on all your documents must be the same. If your name has changed (e.g., due to marriage), you must bring a legal document that links the names, such as a certified Marriage Certificate or a legal name change document.
  • No Lamination: Do not bring laminated documents like birth certificates or Social Security cards, as they are not accepted.
  • Check with the Registry: If you have any unique documents or are unsure if something will be accepted, it is always best to call the registry agent's office ahead of time to confirm.

By gathering and double-checking these documents before you leave the house, you can avoid the frustration of a wasted trip and make your visit to the registry a simple and successful one.
