Getting Your G1 License: Your 5-Step Checklist

Step 1: Are You Eligible for a G1?

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • You must pass a vision test at the DriveTest centre.
  • You must pass the written knowledge test with a score of 80% or higher.

Step 2: What Do I Need to Bring?

You need original identification proving your legal name, date of birth, and signature. Common documents include:
  • Passport (Canadian or foreign)
  • Canadian Citizenship Card with photo

Step 3: How Much Does it Cost?

The G1 test package costs $159.75. This fee is important because it doesn't just cover your knowledge test—it also includes one attempt at your G2 road test.

Step 4: Understanding the Test Format

The G1 test has 40 multiple-choice questions split into two sections:
  • 20 questions on Road Signs
  • 20 questions on Rules of the Road
To pass, you must* answer at least 16 questions correctly in each section.
