Get Your Appointment: A Step-by-Step Guide to Scheduling Your CA Driving Test

You've passed your written test, completed your driver training, and logged dozens of hours of practice. Now, it's time to book the final step: your behind-the-wheel driving test. In California, you cannot simply show up at the DMV to take your road test; an appointment is mandatory.

Due to high demand, securing a convenient appointment can sometimes be a challenge. This guide will walk you through the process step-by-step and provide tips to help you get your test scheduled as smoothly as possible.

Before You Schedule: Are You Eligible?

Make sure you meet the requirements before you attempt to book an appointment.

  • For applicants under 18: You must be at least 16 years old and have held your instruction permit for a minimum of six months. [1, 2, 12]
  • For applicants 18 and older: You must hold a valid instruction permit. There is no minimum holding period, but you must feel confident and ready for the test.

The fastest and most efficient way to book your driving test is through the official California DMV website.

Step 1: Visit the DMV Website

Navigate to the official California DMV website at dmv.ca.gov.

Step 2: Find the "Appointments" Section

On the homepage, look for a link or button that says "Appointments." This will take you to the main appointment portal.

Step 3: Select the Correct Service

The portal will ask what type of appointment you need. Choose the option for "Behind-the-Wheel Drive Test." Do not select "Office Visit" or "Written Test."

Step 4: Choose Your Location

You will be prompted to enter your zip code or city to find nearby DMV field offices. You can select up to three different locations to compare their appointment availability.

  • Pro Tip: If you live in a major metropolitan area like Los Angeles or the Bay Area, appointments will be scarce. Be willing to check offices in surrounding suburbs or smaller towns. A 30-minute drive might save you a month of waiting.

Step 5: Provide Your Information

The system will ask for your personal information to find your record. You will need:

  • Your first and last name as they appear on your permit.
  • Your birth date.
  • Your instruction permit number (also called your Driver's License number).
  • A phone number and/or email address.

Step 6: View the Calendar and Select a Date

The system will display the earliest available appointment at your chosen location(s). This is often several weeks or even months in the future.

  • Finding an Earlier Date: If the offered date is too far out, don't give up. People cancel appointments all the time. Check the system frequently—especially late at night or very early in the morning—as new slots can open up unexpectedly.

Step 7: Confirm Your Appointment

Once you find a date and time that works, select it and confirm. The DMV will send you a confirmation email and/or text message. Save this confirmation! You will need the confirmation number to check in on your test day.

Method 2: Scheduling by Phone

While the online system is preferred, you can also schedule your appointment by calling the DMV's automated phone service.

  • Call 1-800-777-0133.
  • Listen carefully to the prompts and select the options for scheduling a behind-the-wheel driving test.
  • You will need all the same personal and permit information that is required for the online system.

Important Things to Remember

  • Three Strikes Rule: Your application fee is valid for 12 months and gives you three attempts to pass the behind-the-wheel test. [3, 21] If you fail, you must wait 14 days before you can take the test again, and you will need to pay a retest fee for your second and third attempts. [3]
  • Failing Three Times: If you fail the driving test three times, your permit application will be voided. You must start the entire process over again: submit a new application, pay the full application fee, and take the written knowledge test again. [3, 21]
  • Canceling or Rescheduling: If you need to change your appointment, do so at least 72 hours in advance to avoid any issues or potential fees. You can manage your appointment through the DMV website.

Booking your driving test appointment is the final administrative step. By being persistent and planning ahead, you can secure your spot and get ready to earn your California driver's license.
