Renewing Your Idaho Driver's License: A Guide to Online and In-Person Options

While earning your first driver's license is a major accomplishment, keeping that license valid is a responsibility every driver in Idaho shares. Licenses don't last forever, and the state requires periodic renewals to ensure your photo and information are current and that you remain qualified to drive.

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) will typically mail you a renewal notice as a courtesy. However, it is ultimately your responsibility to know your expiration date and renew on time. This guide will walk you through your options.

When Do You Need to Renew?

The validity period of your Idaho driver's license depends on your age and the type of license you choose to purchase.

  • Under 21: Your license expires 5 days after your 21st birthday.
  • 21 and Over: You can choose between a 4-year license or an 8-year license.
  • 63 and Over: You are only eligible for a 4-year license.

Your license expires on your birthday in the final year of its validity. You can renew your license up to 25 months before it expires.

Renewal Method 1: Online Renewal (The Easiest Option)

For many Idaho residents, renewing online is the most convenient way to keep their license current. This allows you to complete the process from home, saving you a trip to a county driver's license office.

Who is Eligible to Renew Online?

You are generally eligible to renew your license online if:

  • You are between the ages of 21 and 69.
  • Your current license is valid or has not been expired for more than 25 months.
  • You are renewing a standard Class D license.
  • Your last renewal was completed in person. (You can only renew online every other cycle).
  • You do not need to change your name.
  • Your license is not suspended or revoked.

How to Renew Online:

  1. Visit the Official ITD Website: Navigate to the state's official driver's license renewal portal.
  2. Enter Your Information: You will need to provide your driver's license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number to access your record.
  3. Follow the Prompts: The system will walk you through the renewal application process, including confirming your address.
  4. Pay the Fee: You will need a credit or debit card to pay the renewal fee online. The fee is $30 for a 4-year license and $55 for an 8-year license.
  5. Receive Your License: Your new license will be mailed to the address the ITD has on file. You can print a temporary receipt to use while you wait.

Renewal Method 2: In-Person at a County Driver's License Office

An in-person visit is required for certain situations. It is a good idea to check if your local county office offers appointments to save time.

When is an In-Person Visit Mandatory?

  • If you are upgrading to a Star Card (REAL ID) for the first time.
  • If you need to change your legal name.
  • If your license has been expired for more than 25 months.
  • If you are 70 years of age or older.
  • If it's time for you to take a new license photo (required every other renewal).

What to Expect and What to Bring:

  1. Your Current Driver's License: This will be your primary form of identification.
  2. Renewal Notice: If you received one, bring it with you.
  3. Documents for a Star Card: If you are getting your first Star Card, you must bring the full set of original documents: one proof of identity, one proof of SSN, and two proofs of residency.
  4. Pass a Vision Test: A vision screening is required for all in-person renewals. Bring your glasses or contacts if you need them.
  5. Pass a Written Test (if required): If your license has been expired for more than 25 months, you will need to retake the written knowledge test.
  6. Get a New Photo: A new photograph will be taken for your updated license.
  7. Pay the Fee: Be prepared to pay the renewal fee.

What if Your License Has Already Expired?

It is illegal to drive on an expired license in Idaho.

  • If your license has been expired for 25 months or less, you can typically renew it without needing to retake any tests, although a late fee will apply.
  • If your license has been expired for more than 25 months, you cannot simply renew it. You will be required to take and pass the vision test and the written knowledge test all over again. The skills test may also be required at the discretion of the examiner.

By staying on top of your expiration date and understanding your renewal options, you can ensure the process is quick, easy, and keeps you legally on the roads of the Gem State.
