Renewing Your NWT Driver's License: A Simple Guide to the Process

Renewing your driver's license is a routine but essential task for every driver in the Northwest Territories. It ensures your photo and personal information remain current and that you stay legally able to drive on northern roads. While it's a process that only comes around every few years, understanding your options can make it quick and painless.

This guide will cover everything you need to know about renewing your NWT driver's license, including when to do it, where to go, what it costs, and whether you can do it online or in person.

When Do You Need to Renew Your License?

In the Northwest Territories, you have the option to renew your driver's license for a term of one, three, or five years. Your license card has a clear expiry date printed on it.

SGI will typically mail you a renewal notice to the address they have on file for you. However, it is ultimately your responsibility as the driver to know your expiry date and renew your license on time. Driving with an expired license is illegal and can result in fines and other complications.

Renewal Option 1: In Person

The traditional way to renew your license is by visiting any Driver and Vehicle Services office or a local issuer.

When You MUST Renew In Person:

  • If your license has been expired for more than two years. In this case, you will have to follow the process for getting a new license, which includes re-testing.
  • If you need to change your address or other personal information.
  • If you are a driver with certain medical conditions or a senior driver who requires a medical examination report for renewal.

What to Bring for In-Person Renewal:

  • Your Expiring Driver's License: This is the primary piece of identification you will need.
  • Renewal Notice (if you have it): This can help speed up the process.
  • Proof of Address Change (if applicable): If you have moved, you will need to provide proof of your new residential address, such as a bank statement, utility bill, or signed lease agreement.
  • Completed Medical Examination Report (if required): Drivers with certain medical conditions, commercial drivers, and senior drivers (at age 75, 80, and every two years after) must submit a medical report.
  • Payment for the Fee: License issuers accept various forms of payment.

Renewal Option 2: Online

For many drivers, renewing online is a convenient and efficient option that can be done from home.

Are You Eligible for Online Renewal?

The Government of the Northwest Territories offers online services for license renewals. You are generally eligible if:

  • Your license is not expired by more than two years.
  • You do not need to provide a new medical report.
  • You are not changing your name or address.

How to Renew Online:

  1. Visit the Official Website: Go to the Government of the Northwest Territories' Driver and Vehicle Services online portal.
  2. Log In or Create an Account: You will likely need to log in with an existing account or register for a new one.
  3. Follow the Prompts: The system will guide you through the renewal process, verifying your information.
  4. Pay the Fee: You must pay the renewal fee using a valid credit card.
  5. Receive Your Temporary License: After payment, you will typically receive a temporary license document to print and carry with you.
  6. Get Your New Card: Your new physical driver's license card will be mailed to your address on file.

Renewal Fees in the NWT

The cost of renewing your license depends on the term you select. Seniors (age 60+) receive a reduced rate. The fees are as follows:

  • 5-year renewal: $103.00 (Seniors: $51.00)
  • 3-year renewal: $79.00 (Seniors: $40.00)
  • 1-year renewal: $43.00 (Seniors: $22.00)

Note: Fees are subject to change. Always confirm the current cost with Driver and Vehicle Services.

What if Your License is Lost, Stolen, or Damaged?

You can also apply for a replacement license either online or in person. You will need to provide identification and pay the replacement fee, which is currently $31.00 (Seniors: $16.00).

By staying on top of your expiry date and understanding the simple renewal process, you can ensure you remain a legally licensed driver in the Northwest Territories without any unnecessary stress or interruption.
