Renewing Your South Carolina License in 2025: Online and In-Person Guide

Every driver in South Carolina must periodically renew their license to legally stay on the road. The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) has streamlined this process, offering convenient online renewal for many drivers, as well as traditional in-person services. Understanding your options and what you need ahead of time can make your renewal experience fast and efficient.

This guide covers everything you need to know about renewing your South Carolina driver's license in 2025, from renewal timelines and fees to the all-important vision test and REAL ID requirements.

When to Renew Your SC License

A standard South Carolina driver's license is valid for eight years and expires on your birthday. The SCDMV allows you to renew your license up to six months before its expiration date. While the SCDMV may send you a renewal notice in the mail, it is your responsibility as a driver to know your expiration date and renew on time.

What if My License Has Already Expired?

Driving with an expired license is illegal. If your license has been expired for less than nine months, you can still renew it following the standard procedures. However, if your license has been expired for more than nine months, you will be required to re-apply as a new driver, which means you must pass both the knowledge test and the road test again.

Option 1: Renewing Your License Online

For many South Carolinians, renewing online is the quickest and easiest method. It saves you a trip to an SCDMV office and can be completed from the comfort of your home.

Are You Eligible for Online Renewal?

You can generally renew your Class D driver's license online if:

  • You are a U.S. citizen.
  • Your license is not suspended or expired for more than nine months.
  • You are not applying for a REAL ID for the first time or upgrading to one.
  • You do not need to change your name or other critical information.
  • You are 64 years old or younger.

How to Renew Online:

  1. Visit the SCDMV Website: Navigate to the official SCDMV website and find the link for "Renew my License."
  2. Enter Your Information: You will need to provide your driver's license number, date of birth, and Social Security number to begin.
  3. Confirm Your Details: The system will show the information the SCDMV has on file for you, including your address. You will need to confirm it is all correct.
  4. Pay the Fee: Use a valid credit or debit card to pay the renewal fee.
  5. Receive Your License: Your new license will be mailed to the address on file. The online system will also provide a temporary license that you can print and use for up to 60 days while you wait for the permanent card to arrive.

Option 2: Renewing Your License In Person

If you are not eligible for online renewal, are 65 or older, or need to get your first REAL ID, you must visit an SCDMV office in person. It is highly recommended to schedule an appointment online to reduce your wait time.

The Vision Test Requirement

A key part of the in-person renewal process is the vision test. All drivers must pass a vision screening to renew their license in South Carolina. If you wear glasses or contact lenses to drive, be sure to wear them for the test. If you fail the vision screening at the SCDMV, you will be given a form to be completed by a licensed eye care professional, which you must then return to the DMV.

What to Bring for an In-Person Renewal:

  • Your current South Carolina Driver's License.
  • Proof of Address (if you have moved): If your address has changed, you must bring two acceptable documents proving your new residency.
  • REAL ID Documents (if applicable): If you are applying for your first REAL ID, you must bring the full set of original documents proving your identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of residency. Refer to our complete REAL ID Document Checklist for details.
  • Payment for Fees: Be prepared to pay the renewal fee. As of early 2024, the fee for an eight-year renewal is $25.00. Fees are subject to change.

The In-Person Process:

  1. Schedule an Appointment: Use the SCDMV website to schedule a renewal appointment.
  2. Complete the Application: You may need to fill out a new application form.
  3. Pass the Vision Test: You must pass the vision screening administered by the DMV employee.
  4. Get a New Photo: A new photograph will be taken for your updated license.
  5. Pay the Fee: Pay the renewal fee with cash, check, or a credit/debit card.
  6. Receive Your License: In most cases, the SCDMV will print and issue your new license card over the counter before you leave.

By choosing the right renewal method for your situation and arriving prepared, you can ensure your license stays current with minimal fuss.
