Your SGI Document Checklist: What to Bring for Your SK Driving Appointments

A trip to an SGI motor license issuer is a major step in your driving journey in Saskatchewan. Whether you're applying for your first learner's license or showing up for your big road test, the last thing you want is to be turned away because of a missing or incorrect piece of paper. SGI's documentation requirements are very specific and must be followed exactly.

To ensure your appointment is smooth, successful, and stress-free, use this complete document checklist. We've broken it down by appointment type so you can be confident you have everything you need before you leave the house.

The Most Important Rule: Originals and Residency

Before we get into the specific lists, remember these two critical rules:

  1. Original Documents Only: You must bring original documents. Photocopies, expired documents, or digital pictures on your phone will not be accepted.
  2. Proof of Saskatchewan Residency: You must prove that you live in Saskatchewan.

Checklist 1: For a First-Time Class 7 Learner's License

This is your first official interaction with SGI and has the most rigorous identity requirements. You must prove who you are and where you live with at least two pieces of acceptable ID.

  • [ ] Two (2) Pieces of Identification:

    • One document must show your full legal name and date of birth.
    • The second document must contain your legal name and signature.
    • Both documents must be from the acceptable list provided by SGI.

    Examples of Acceptable Combinations:

    • Combination A: Canadian Birth Certificate (proves name/DOB) AND a valid Canadian Passport (proves name/signature).
    • Combination B: Valid Canadian Passport (proves name/DOB/signature) AND your Saskatchewan Health Card (proves name/signature).
    • Combination C: Certificate of Indian Status (proves name/DOB/signature) AND a second piece of ID like a Social Insurance card or credit card.

Always check the official SGI website for the full, current list of acceptable identification documents.

  • [ ] Proof of Saskatchewan Residency: If neither of your two ID documents shows your current Saskatchewan address, you must provide a separate document to prove it.

    • Acceptable documents include:
      • A recent utility bill (power, energy, phone, internet) in your name.
      • A bank or credit card statement mailed to your address.
      • A rental or lease agreement with your name and address.
  • [ ] Parental/Guardian Consent: If you are under 18 years old, a parent or legal guardian must accompany you to sign the consent form.

  • [ ] Payment for Fees: Be prepared to pay for the written knowledge tests and the fee for your license card. SGI issuers accept various forms of payment.

  • [ ] Corrective Lenses: If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them with you. You will be required to take a vision test on the spot.

Checklist 2: For Your Class 5 Road Test Appointment

On the day of your practical driving test, you need documents for yourself and for the vehicle you'll be using.

  • [ ] Your Class 7 Learner's License: You must have your physical license card. You cannot take a road test with just a temporary paper license.
  • [ ] Driver Education Certificate: Proof that you have successfully completed the mandatory 6 hours of in-class and 6 hours of in-car training. Your driving school should provide this to you.
  • [ ] Valid Vehicle Registration: The original registration certificate for the vehicle you are using for the test. Ensure it is not expired.
  • [ ] Proof of Valid Insurance: The vehicle must be insured, and you should have the liability card (pink slip) with you as proof.
  • [ ] Corrective Lenses: If your license has a condition requiring you to wear glasses or contacts, the examiner will verify that you are wearing them.
  • [ ] Confirmation of Appointment/Payment: While often not required, it is a good idea to have your appointment confirmation email or a receipt of your pre-paid road test fee handy.

Checklist 3: For Exchanging an Out-of-Province/Country License

If you are a new resident moving to Saskatchewan, here's what you'll need to exchange your old license for an SK one.

  • [ ] Your Existing, Valid Driver's License: You will be required to surrender your license from your previous jurisdiction.
  • [ ] Two (2) Pieces of Identification (see requirements from Checklist 1).
  • [ ] Proof of Saskatchewan Residency (see requirements from Checklist 1).
  • [ ] Driver's Abstract/Record (for some international drivers): If you are from a non-reciprocal country, you will need an official driving record from your home country to get credit for your years of experience. This must be dated within the last 30 days.
  • [ ] Official, Certified Translation (if applicable): If any of your documents are not in English, you must provide a certified translation.

By taking a few minutes to organize these documents in a folder the night before your appointment, you can save yourself a huge amount of time and stress. A prepared applicant is a successful applicant.
